Author Info: Laurie Notaro is known for her hilarious non-fiction books based on outrageous stories from her life. Spooky Little Girl is her 2nd work of fiction.
I saw Laurie at Changing Hands Bookstore, in Tempe, AZ. Born in Brooklyn, raised in Phoenix and currently residing in Oregon, this chick is a scream! She is also down-to-earth, approachable and appreciative of her fans. And, she frequently cracks herself up (one of my favorite traits in a person.) She’s the kind of woman I'd do a shot with, IF I still did those kind of things. If you get a chance to see her live, I highly recommend it. An hour with Laurie Notaro is better than watching stand-up on Comedy Central.
Quickie Synopsis: Young woman dies suddenly and ends up in Ghost School. She must complete a haunting assignment in order to right a situation in her former life and move on in the afterlife.
Terri’s Spooky Little Girl Favorite Things
Favorite term: "Surprise Demisers"
Favorite surprise: Book is based on a real person's sudden demise and sadly nobody knew she died. She just disappeared.
Favorite plot point: It would totally suck to be suddenly dead then find out nobody knows you’re suddenly dead.
Favorite quirky character: Naunie. She got kicked out of The State (think heaven, nirvana, bliss) for stalking famous blue eyed movie star/singers from the fifties.
Favorite chapters: Why Am I Wearing Underwear and The Dog and Phony Show. (Aren’t those great chapter titles?) Love the names of the “ghost busters,” Ramses, Isis and Solstice. Ghosts sneaking around, trying to hide, getting caught, trying to avoid getting sucked into the vortex, I read this hilarious chapter a couple times.
Envelope Please: Spooky Little Girl gets a 4! IT ROCKS! Cheers erupt. The crowd goes wild!
Why? An unusual plot based on a true story, a cast of quirky characters, great names for everyone and everything, LTS (laugh to self) and LOL (laugh out loud) count was in the double digits. Wistfulness and poignancy offset the comedy so there’s depth to the story. There’s an adorable, loyal dog, and lots of movie moments, meaning the scenes were richly drawn. I stayed up late to finish this mood-lifting novel.
